Prioritize the journey, not the destination

Dear Reader,

It’s almost August and I feel like summer just kicked off. I’m trying not to panic.

If you've kept up with your inbox this spring/summer, you know that I’ve been in the process of moving since April. We are finally nearing the end of the long process, but it’s been just that – a long process. When your move starts on April 17 and ends on August 7, it’s not a surprise that summer seems to have escaped me.

On top of that, we have an extra college drop-off to do this year. In just three short weeks (THREE WEEKS!) we will be packing up and driving Timmy to Columbus, Ohio to get ready for his first football game… oops! … I mean to kick off his college education. I remembered today that one of my earliest newsletters was about the college selection process with Timmy. (Most of you probably didn’t see that post because it was WAY early…give it a read!) I looked back at it today and laughed. Ah, the sweatshirt told us all we needed to know. We could have skipped all the touring and saved a lot of time and money!

But, like with many things the learning happens in the journey, not the destination.

I would never consider my college visit time with Timmy a waste, even though he ended up enrolling at the school he’s been talking about attending since this first view of The Shoe:

(He’s the littler one.)

Through our college visits, I learned so much about Timmy, and he learned so much about what he wants out of his college experience. He made a thoughtful decision and is that much more confident in what’s to come because of it.

Sometimes I have to remind myself to savor the journey.

I’m going through it right now with my business. I am learning so much, trying new things, getting feedback, and adjusting. I catch myself wondering if I’m ever going to “get there.” But what is “there” anyway? There’s a lot that’s good about what’s “here” and I need to lean into it.

  • “Here” is wrapping up my first Mid-Career Leadership Cohort and getting testimonials from members.
  • “Here” is handing off the ProfessHERs pilot for its second year of implementation after supporting it through a successful, strong start.
  • “Here” is a growing inbox of women interested in learning more about my work and a calendar filling up with intro calls.
  • “Here” is my second podcast interview going live and 3 new speaking engagement on my calendar.
  • “Here” is a few more weeks of having both my boys home with me.

I’ll get “there,” but I’ll enjoy “here” while I am at it.

Are you wondering when you’ll get there? Take a moment today to savor the journey!

Bettter yet, share what's "here" for you right now!

“Hey Beth, what’s this podcast you mentioned?”

Oh, right! This month I had the pleasure of being on the Dominate Your Day podcast hosted by Dana Williams. Give it a listen and let me know what you think! It’s available on both Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
